First Time Setup with FTK

Follow the steps in the install-horizon tutorial. Once logged in to your Horizon desktop, you should see something similar to this. ftksetup

Start FTK by clicking on the FTK icon on the desktop.

ftksetup

You will receive an elevation request, click Yes.

ftksetup

The FTK splash screen will appear. It can take some time.

ftksetup

Finally, you will be brought to this screen. Since this is the first time you’ve run FTK, you will be asked to set up a database and user.

ftksetup

This dialog starts the database setup. Just click OK.

ftksetup

The next screen prompts you to enter some credentials. Before you logged in, a database (Postgres) was installed on your VM. This dialog is just asking for the credentials to connect to it. Enter 123456 as the password and click OK.

ftksetup

The database is being initialized with the default information. This could take a few minutes.

ftksetup

Next, FTK will set up an internal user (FTK can be set up with multiple investigators sharing a database of evidence). For our purposes, it’s easiest to just have FTK use our login credentials. Click on “Trusted User” to set this up.

ftksetup

The next screen should fill in your username (for example, ab12345n). Confirm that it is correct and click OK.

If any portion of this process goes wrong, or if you decide to set FTK up in another way (some instructions have you set up a separate “ftkuser” account), your VM will have to be reset to default as we can’t reset this internal account.

ftksetup

You may get a quick popup after this process about previewing visualization. You can click OK. This isn’t important.

ftksetup

And there you go, all set. If you have any issues contact the Helpdesk.
